Is your sex life a little lacklustre lately? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Sometimes the hustle and bustle of daily life can make getting in the mood at the end of the day can seem unappealing (not to mention exhausting). Maintaining a healthy sex life, however, boasts many benefits for your mind, body and overall health. Luckily, there are some tried and tested methods that have proven to be effective when it comes to boosting your libido – and it all comes down to food!

What if we told you that simply eating a small portion of delicious foods like watermelon or chocolate could significantly increase your sexual desire? Well, we’re to tell you exactly that – and several other tasty foods that will put you and your partner in the mood as well.

Here are 11 foods that will spark a flame in your relationship, no matter how old you are!

Watermelon

Many doctors have started referring to watermelon as the new Viagra. It’s been proven that watermelon delivers Viagra-like effects on blood vessels which can quickly boost the libido. If you’re looking to get in the mood, cut up a bowl of fresh watermelon (or make a watermelon smoothie) and you’ll be ready to go in no time.

Asparagus

Vitamin B is essential for a healthy sex drive because it increases the production of histamine. Histamine is critical for a healthy sex drive.  Needless to day, asparagus is packed full of Vitamin B which makes this delicious vegetable a go-to food for men and women looking to kick their sex life up a notch.

Avocados

Avocados have become one of the most popular foods of the past few years. This particular fruit has become incredibly popular in Europe, where many people eat them to boost their libidos.

According to OrganicAuthority, “The ancient Aztec’s nickname for avocado was “ahuacatl,” or testicle because of the fruit’s shapely form. The Catholic Spanish priests found avocados so sexy, they forbade them to their parishioners.

Chilies

It probably comes as no surprise that these hot chili peppers can make your sex life hotter as well. Capsaicin is the ingredient in a chili pepper that makes it hot.

Capsaicin promotes the release of chemicals that have been proven to increase your heart rate and trigger the release of endorphins which give you a natural high. This natural high will give you the energy and desire you’ve been looking for to heat things up in the bedroom.

Chocolate

If you’re looking to boost the mood in the bedroom, consider serving a few pieces of chocolate alongside your champagne tonight. Chocolate has more antioxidants than red wine and contains a stimulating chemical known as phenylethylamine. This essential chemical stimulates a sense of excitement and well-being and is a sure-fire way to heat things up.

Still don’t believe us? The Journal of Sexual medicine published a study which revealed that women who consumed a piece of chocolate a day (just one, ladies!) had a more active sex life than those who didn’t.

Lemons

One of the biggest reasons for a decrease in sex drive is stress. Stress can make it difficult for anyone to get in the mood. Eliminating the worry and anxiety in your life can make you a better partner sexually. That’s where lemons come in. Lemons are known as a natural stress reliever.

Adding a slice of lemon to a glass of water or cup of tea will take away your worries, boost your energy and increase your desire to spice things up behind closed doors.

Nuts

Add a handful of nuts to your morning breakfast, a salad or a dessert will go a long way in boosting your libido. Nuts – particularly walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts – are a great source of L-arginine.

L-arginine gets converted into nitric oxide which has long since been known as a sex booster. Many nuts also contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which aid in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system.

Oysters

If you like oysters, they may become your new best friend. These slippery, suggestive appetizers are considered one of the most effective aphrodisiacs. Gloria Tsang, a registered dietician from Vancouver, says “A lot of shellfish—including oysters, clams, crabs, lobsters and mussels—are high in zinc, which can trigger a surge in the production of sex hormones.”

Olives

Olives are a great food for boosting the sex drive in both men and women. The Ancient Greeks ate olives to help aid in their power of seduction. Men experienced a particular boost when eating green olives while black olives seemed to do the trick for women.

Honey

There’s a reason men and women in medieval times used honey instead of champagne to toast at weddings – because it’s proven to boost sexual desire. The honey base is full of boron – a mineral proven to increase testosterone while metabolizing estrogen. Add a spoonful of honey to your afternoon tea and get ready for a night of fun.

Arugula

Arugula has become a staple in any salad (or pasta dish, for that matter). It’s not only delicious but it’s also known as one of the most popular aphrodisiacs. Employed as a natural libido booster by Greek philosophers since the 1st century AD, this leafy green vegetable has been tied to boosting sex drive because of its high level of antioxidants and minerals (like calcium, folic acid and magnesium).
