There’s always been something about Matthew McConaughey, with his blond hair, blue eyes and ripped physique. He dated a number of famous women including Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz, but it took meeting model Camila Alves, the love of his life, for him to finally settle down for good. Now he’s the perfect family man, which makes him even sexier. He’s been with Alves for more than a decade now, which is why we have 8 things you didn’t know about the gorgeous couple:

8. Meeting

They met at Hyde Lounge club on Sunset Boulevard back in 2006. He was there with Lance Armstrong and he was making margaritas at their table when he saw her from across the room. “Out of the corner of my eye, this sort of aqua-green figure went floating across the frame about 20 feet in front of me,” he said. “My eye went up and I remember what came out of my mouth. I didn’t say ‘Who is that?’ I went, ‘What is that?’ As l was trying to get that’s attention across the room, I went in my head, ‘This is not the kind of woman you call over across the room, McConaughey. Get your ass out of your chair and go get her.’ Which I did.” According to her, she didn’t recognize McConaughey. It was only when she saw Armstrong that she realized who he was. They went on their first date three days later.

7. Modular Home

When Matthew and Camila first began living together, it was in a customized Airstream trailer. In 2008, they bought their first house together in Malibu. Sources say that the house he bought wasn’t even for sale! He knocked on the owner’s door, put on the McConaughey charm and convinced the person to sell him the house!

6. Ultimatum

The actor wasn’t keen on getting married, so Alves had to basically give him an ultimatum. “I had to get to the point where I saw it as more than just the thing to do,” he told GQ. “You know, I didn’t want it to be a destination; the fun is that we’re on the adventure together. And look, some of it had to do with her putting it on me. It took her going, ‘C’mon, Big Boy, Mr. Easygoing-We’ll-Get-to-It-When-We-Get-to-It. Either s–t or get off the pot.”

5. Engagement

The Oscar-winning actor popped the question on Christmas Day in 2011 with a rose-cut Cathy Waterman engagement ring. “It was the last gift to be opened and I wrapped it in seven different boxes so Camila would have to keep unwrapping,” he told People. “She got the ring, I took a knee and asked her to marry me and take my name. After a bit, she conceded… thankfully.” According to Camila, he picked the ring!

4. Marriage

The pair were married in Austin, Texas in June 2012 in front of 120 close friends and family, which included celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Kenny Chesney and Woody Harrelson. It was a three-day affair and took place on the couple’s property. They set up a makeshift campground so that wedding guests could stay for the weekend. Their children were involved too. Their son Levi was a ring bearer and their daughter Vida was a flower girl.

3. Children

Matthew and Camila have three children together. Their son Levi was born in 2007; their daughter Vida was born in 2010; and their son Livingston was born in 2012. The Dallas Buyers Club star has said that he always wanted to be a father. “I always wanted to be a father and thought it would be great, but it just took the right woman and the right time to make it all happen,” he said.

2. The Traveling Circus

When the actor goes on location for movies, his family comes with him so that they can all be together. At times, it feels a bit like a traveling circus! “I’ve got a wife who challenges me. There were two movies I wanted to do last year, but they were back-to-back with no separation. She was like, ‘You want to do it – buck up, grab your nuts, and make it happen. We’ll be there with you’” he told Details.

1. Adventurers

The Mud star has always been quite the adventurer and his wife likes to join him on his adventures too! While she can keep up with her husband, she doesn’t always dress appropriately for it. “We went up to 3,000 feet and I had on hiking shoes and I was all set up and ready to go. Camila was wearing Havaianas sandals and a white skirt. I came down to the bottom of that hill afterward and had blood on me, all muddy … and that girl didn’t have a speck of dust on her,” he said of one of their hikes in French Polynesia.
