Aromatic essential oils, the kind used in spas, massage parlors, and homes to create an environment of relaxation, might be doing you more bad than good.
A study from Taiwan, published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology, reveals that those soothing aromas you love to use to unwind after a long day of work may actually possess dangerous implications to your heart health if you’re exposed for more than an hour.
Researchers monitored a group of 100 healthy spa workers exposed to the vapor of bergamot oil—a remedy known for aiding digestion, combating infection, and for its calming properties for soothing anxiety, stress and depression, experienced increased blood pressure and heart rate after one hour of exposure to the essential oil.
According to study authors, “Prolonged exposure for longer than one hour to essential oils may be harmful to cardiovascular health among spa workers.”
