Older Driver Safety Awareness Week spans December 5th to 9th, 2016. Let us start by saying, not every older adult with a health problem is an unsafe driver. Most are, in fact, very safe drivers. However, as we age, we experience health issues and changes in mental, sensory, and physical abilities that can impact the way we drive.

Instead of focusing on the negative, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aims to educate the public on the importance of mobility for everyone, and offer solutions rather than roadblocks to transportation. Occupational therapy practitioners that can help evaluate driving ability, offer rehabilitation, and vehicle safely based on an individuals’ unique challenges.
