Osteoarthritis and Joint Stiffness: Exercise To Prevent Both

2 min read

By Catherine Roberts

Many people do not realize that the stiffness they feel in their joints could be linked to osteoarthritis. This is a condition that is common in patients who are over 40 years of age which can result in stiffness, pain, and discomfort. Typically this discomfort is felt in the knees, hips, back, or neck. Osteoarthritis is not part of the aging process however and risk factors have been identified with this condition. The risk factors for osteoarthritis include your age, body mass index, diabetes, and repeat trauma.

Diagnosing osteoarthritis is done by visiting the doctor and having x-rays completed. If you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, there are a number of treatment options available to you depending on the severity. Some of the most common treatments for this condition include therapy, acupuncture, and medications. Staying active when you have osteoarthritis is crucial as decreased activity will accelerate muscle loss. Patients are recommended to use water exercising or swimming as a method of activity that will not stress joints.

Other steps that a patient can take to help control their osteoarthritis include posture, therapy, weight reduction, and an improved diet. This condition is serious and should not be ignored as symptoms will increase over time. Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in adults in North America.
