Dermatophytosis, commonly called “ringworm,” is a fungal infection affecting the outermost layers of the skin. It is contracted through contact with the infectious fungus, which may lurk in swimming pools or tanning beds. Ringworm can also be contracted by sharing sporting equipment, towels, washcloths and bathing supplies with people who are already infected. It also commonly affects domesticated animals, and can be transmitted from animals to humans through close contact. The classic symptom of ringworm is raised, red rings on the skin. Treatment centers on the application of topical antifungal medications, which typically bring the condition to a successful resolution.
